Rapid Insights: Abbott Elementary’s Warm Humor Makes the Grade

ABC’s mockumentary comedy about a group of teachers in an underfunded Philadelphia elementary school became a breakout success in its first season, blowing up in the ratings thanks to snowballing word-of-mouth and widespread critical acclaim. Now, fresh off its two well-deserved Emmy wins (for writing and supporting actress), the single-camera sitcom returns this week to much anticipation for its sophomore outing. Here’s what you need to know about Abbott Elementary:

Vault AI uses index scores to describe the impact a given story/theme/element will have on specific KPIs:
≤79 Disappointing  80-89 Challenging  90-109 Average  110-119 Promising  120+ Outstanding

Who’s watching this series?
Demographically, nearly everyone. While Abbott is a strong performer on live TV, the show has also received a massive bump in ratings via streaming, and each platform brings in a different audience profile. Older women (62% female aged 35+) are largely driving its broadcast success, while SVOD viewers lean male and cover a wider age range (57% male / 51% aged <30). Ethnically the show’s viewers are 29% African American, 7% Hispanic, and 65% other. Overall, the show has a much broader demographic appeal than ABC’s other sitcoms going into the 2022 fall season, all of which land squarely in the F35+ quadrant (The ConnorsThe GoldbergsHome Economics).

How’s the current social buzz around the show?
Peaking. Thanks to actress Sheryl Lee Ralph and creator Quinta Brunson’s headline-making acceptance speeches (that song!), online activity around Abbott has skyrocketed since last Monday, maxing out our social buzz metric (of 160) and making the show top-of-mind going into its S2 premiere.

What is the impact of Abbott Elementary’s Mockumentary style?
While it is a familiar format, it really helps elevate the humor. As the season gets underway and the Emmy buzz settles, the show’s mockumentary conceit and clever Parody (115) of public school Workplace Dynamics (128) will be core drivers of conversation.

What made S1 such a standout success?
Its dry humor and warmth. The Supportive Relationships (157) among the quirky educators all fighting together in the public school trenches–especially between newbie Janine and experienced but jaded Barbara–has been the show’s top ratings draw since the beginning, followed by its hilarious Awkward & Funny Moments (147) that lovingly skewer Janine’s naivety in a style reminiscent of Parks & Recreation.

Why did audiences keep coming back?
For the School Setting (137). The show’s scholastic environment provides fodder for an endless series of stories offering both of-the-place specificity and widespread audience relatability and, along with its humor, is a top driver for bingeability.

What type of viewing experience will keep the show going through S2?
A warm and fuzzy one. While Abbott does highlight the unfortunate realities of an underfunded school system, it does so with a sense of hope and idealism, and it’s this type of positive emotion (Serenity 118Optimism 117Joy 117) that will prove most crucial to the show’s longevity.

Rapid Insights: Amsterdam Connects as a Star-studded, Absurdist Whodunnit

David O. Russell’s intriguing new showpiece premieres in theaters in early October, and it promises to be a doozy: slick 30s noir setting, buzzy narrative, tantalizing mystery, and comical mad-cap shenanigans by some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. The casting roster in particular has piqued viewer and critic interest alike, with even minor roles going to silver screen icons. Here’s what you need to know about Amsterdam:

Vault AI uses index scores to describe the impact a given story/theme/element will have on specific KPIs:
≤79 Disappointing  80-89 Challenging  90-109 Average  110-119 Promising  120+ Outstanding

Who will be the film’s theatrical audience?
Amsterdam will court older viewers (skewing 70% aged 30+) and is expected to be gender-balanced (50% female / 50% male).

What will make Amsterdam a must-see?
The absurdity of its mystery. The film is, in essence, a Buddy Comedy of Errors (160), in which three ridiculously hapless friends witness a murder in the 1930s and unwittingly become suspects themselves. The central whodunnit Murder Mystery (152) that emerges as the three search for the real killer will keep audiences engrossed in the plot; at the same time, the silly, slapstick tone of their investigation juts up against scenes of shocking Action & Violence (123), the combination of which will provide an engaging viewing experience. The balance of these elements is also what will keep the film’s appeal broad; men will come for the action-comedy, while women will watch for its core mystery.

How important is the historical setting for this film?
It’s noteworthy but not crucial for box office. The Period Piece (107) elements of the 1930s-set Amsterdam are not its major draw; while the Depression-era wealth disparities, racial overtones, over-the-top gangsters, and other trappings will contribute heavily to the film’s quirky-noir essence, viewers will be more attracted to its core comedic murder mystery. It’s worth noting, however, that the period aspects will be a strong enticement specifically for women 30+.

How important are the film’s A-list actors?
Essential. Amsterdam’s Star-Studded Cast (125) boasts a veritable embarrassment of big-name riches, from favored leads Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, and John David Washington to venerated stand-outs like Robert De Niro, Rami Malek, Chris Rock, Anya Taylor-Joy, Michael Shannon, and Zoe Saldaña in smaller roles; as a group, this very well-known ensemble offers strong appeal, particularly for men.

How does social buzz currently look for Amsterdam?
Somewhat muted. Thanks in part to Don’t Worry Darling and its Venice Film Festival premiere sucking up most of the movie-gossip oxygen, Amsterdam’s online presence in terms of tweets and YouTube trailer views is a bit behind. However, the existing chatter so far is quite positive, and the film’s much-teased Taylor Swift cameo has become a growing topic of conversation. Amsterdam still has several weeks to go before release, and plenty of opportunity remains for it to make a big splash as its ramping-up campaign leans farther into its core viewership drivers.

Rapid Insights: Andor Will Focus on the Rebel Alliance in a Galaxy Far, Far Away

Premiering next week, Disney+’s newest live-action Star Wars series will serve as a prequel to the film Rogue One and is set five years before the events of that 2016 movie. Already confirmed for a second season, the show traces the formation of the Rebel Alliance, with Diego Luna reprising his role as a thief-turned-Rebel-spy who will ultimately steal the plans to the Death Star (and kick off the events in A New Hope). Here’s what you need to know about Andor:

Vault AI uses index scores to describe the impact a given story/theme/element will have on specific KPIs:
≤79 Disappointing  80-89 Challenging  90-109 Average  110-119 Promising  120+ Outstanding

Who will be tuning in for this new Star Wars adventure?
Mostly older men. Andor’s audience will skew heavily male (61%) and 30+ (67%), very much in line with Disney+’s other live-action franchise extensions (Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Book of Boba Fett, The Mandalorian).

Which story element will most capture audiences’ attention?
The people enduring and fighting back. Andor is a story of David-against-Goliath resistance, and its most crucial ratings drivers revolve around the formation of the scrappy Rebel Alliance: its campaign against Empire oppression (Rebels 160), its members’ determination to survive and persevere (Survival Skills 160), and its leader’s evolution from cynical bystander to dedicated revolutionary (Stepping Up 160).

What emotional experience can viewers expect?
A tense and gripping one. As the evil Galactic Empire amasses power, the show will lean heavily into the Fear (136) and Terror (129) of those Being Hunted (129) and forced to flee from its persecution. The Rebels’ resulting desire for Vengeance (122) and freedom from its tyranny will ultimately drive the events of the story.

How will the Star Wars IP impact Andor?
It will make the show more bingeable. In line with Disney+’s other franchise series, Andor’s placement within the Star Wars Universe (123) and its ties to the broader in-world timeline will keep audiences glued to their seats, as will the accompanying Space Setting (142) and aircraft, droids, and other futuristic Gizmos and Technology (140) that viewers love.

What will set Andor apart from the other Star Wars series?
Its broader focus. While Andor does follow Cassian Andor’s growth from petty thief to Rebel spy, the show also encompasses a wider view of the Rebel vs. Empire war and tracks a number of key characters on both sides of the emerging conflict to set the stage for later events in the franchise. In contrast, The MandalorianThe Book of Boba Fett, and Obi-Wan Kenobi have all concentrated more heavily on their central heroes’ Journeys of Self-Discovery, one-man Missions, and personal Relationships.

*Publicly released trailers for series are evaluated using Vault AI’s algorithms – utilizing our proprietary 120K+ story element database alongside ratings performance and other datasets – to identify unique combinations of stories, themes, characters, and genre elements that will drive success.

Rapid Insights: The Rings of Power Shines in Bringing Epic Tolkien to the Small Screen

In creating the most expensive show ever made, Amazon has taken a giant swing with their much-anticipated new Lord of the Rings series, and their gamble has already paid off with a slew of positive reviews and Prime Video’s most-watched premiere to date. Derived from the appendices in J.R.R. Tolkien’s original LotR novels, this new show is set thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and tells the story of the forging of the titular Rings and the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron in Middle Earth. Here’s what you need to know about The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power:

Vault AI uses index scores to describe the impact a given story/theme/element will have on specific KPIs:
≤79 Disappointing  80-89 Challenging  90-109 Average  110-119 Promising  120+ Outstanding

Who’s tuning in for this new series?
The same epic fantasy audience that has made similar titles a hit. The Rings of Power viewers skew male (56%) and older (63% aged 30+), a profile very similar to The WitcherThe Sandman, and the SVOD release of House of the Dragon. Interestingly, however, fellow Amazon saga Wheel of Time leans more female.

Have fans been anticipating the show’s release?
Most definitely yes. After big spikes in online activity with the first two trailer drops earlier this summer, social buzz has maxed out our scale (of 160) and remained there ever since the release of the final trailer on Aug 23. So far, The Rings of Power has shown more sustained buzz than the recently-released House of the Dragon, which has slipped a bit since the show’s premiere.

How does the Lord of the Rings connection impact the show?
It gives it its identity. The IP Extension (113) that celebrates Tolkien’s Distinctly Realized World (108) of rings, Elves, and Hobbits both situates the show squarely in the realm of Fantasy (115) and contributes to its bingeability. At the same time, the classic franchise tenets of a Dangerous Mission (118) undertaken by brave but unlikely heroes, the Scary Situations (122) and dangerous obstacles they must overcome, and the epic Battle Action (120) on display during army-wide clashes are major drivers of all aspects of series engagement. Tolkien’s legendary universe is essentially a world all its own, one so uniquely fleshed out and enmeshed in the social consciousness that it can almost be called its own genre.

What makes the Rings of Power story stand out within the franchise?
Its Strong Female Protagonist. The show follows a much-younger version of Galadriel, the beatific, elder stateswoman Elf featured in the Lord of the Rings trilogy (and played by Cate Blanchett in the movies). In this iteration, Galadriel is a brash, headstrong warrior fighting to prove Sauron’s treachery, and it is her character’s long-term journey that will most drive social buzz (130) and ratings (126). The contrast between Galadriel and the timid male Hobbits Bilbo and Frodo particularly helps Rings of Power feel unique from its predecessor films.

What will keep viewers watching into a second season?
A raft of unlikely companions. In addition to Galadriel’s personal journey, Rings of Power follows a number of characters grouped into various mismatched Team-Ups (114)– including two homebound Hobbits and a mysterious stranger, as well as Galadriel and a human fugitive–and explores how they demonstrate Heroism (111) and bravery in the face of adversity. All are key drivers for series longevity.

What will pull in international audiences?
The gorgeous cinematography. Just as the beautiful locations set the LotR films apart, Outdoor Adventure is the top series viewership driver across key international markets; audiences everywhere are intrigued by the stunning, epic-worthy scenery of Middle Earth.

Rapid Insights: The Rom-com Makes a Theatrical Return

The mid-budget romcom has been experiencing a true resurgence as of late, which will test whether theatrical audiences are ready for a more grounded, relationship-oriented form of escapism. Universal is bringing two genre headliners to cinemas this fall. Bros, produced by Judd Apatow, represents the future as the first gay romcom produced by a major studio; Ticket to Paradise is a welcome throwback to the past and stars two romantic icons of the silver screen. Here’s the future outlook for these feel-good titles:

Vault AI uses index scores to describe the impact a given story/theme/element will have on opening weekend success: ≤79 Disappointing  80-89 Challenging  90-109 Average  110-119 Promising  120+ Outstanding

What type of audience is attracted to these films?
Women, but the exact proportion depends on the movie. Based on the trailers, Ticket to Paradise is expected to be 64% female, while the male-heavy Bros is expected to run a bit closer to gender-balanced (at 54% female).

What will coax viewers out to the cinema?
The movies’ unique milieus. Demand will be driven by the promise of an escape into immersive, welcoming new worlds: the Millennial Yuppie Life (160) explored in Bros, with NYC-based board meetings, gym sessions, and boys’ nights out, as well as the Tropical Vacation (160) of Ticket to Paradise, featuring resort luaus, swimming with dolphins, and a beach wedding, are top ratings drivers. At the same time, the romance of it all is much more important for Bros (Unexpected Meet Cute, 160) than Paradise (Romantic Whirlwind, 108) as the former feeds more directly off of its insular setting.

What will make these particular films stand out from the rest of the genre?
The specificity of their core group relationships. The most important distinguishing element of Bros is its exploration of Queer Culture (142) and representation across sexualities and sexual identities, making it a particularly notable stand-out among theatrically-released romcoms. For Ticket to Paradise, the central Family Conflict (151), in which divorced parents take issue with their daughter’s decision to marry, gives the film a lived-in feel as it grapples with complex family dynamics and parenting questions. Both will make their respective titles feel fresh and original.

Is it important for romcoms today to lean into the ‘com’?
Yes. Though each of these titles offers up a different flavor of humor, comedy is nevertheless an important component of both their demand and freshness as viewers gravitate toward lighter fare that will make them laugh. The silly, Funny Romance (155) in Bros that arises as the leads bumble their way into each other’s arms, as well as the over-the-top Schemes & Shenanigans (129) cooked up by the meddling parents in Ticket to Paradise, will support ratings; Paradise’s Insult Comedy (149), stemming from the leads’ hilarious, snarky bickering, is also crucial in making that film feel unique.

How important are the movies’ recognizable casts?
They’re crucially additive. Billy Eichner–co-writer and star of Bros–brings his well-known Pop Culture (141) sensibility and cachet to heighten his film’s freshness score. Julia Roberts and George Clooney–the headliners of Ticket to Paradise–leverage their star personas into their characters’ sparkling Love/Hate Relationship (119) and enemies-to-lovers story arc, boosting their movie’s demand.

Rapid Insights: Rick and Morty Returns to Build on Its Out-Of-This-Universe Success

Adult Swim’s mega-popular animated sci-fi comedy has delighted audiences since 2013 with laugh-out-loud sci-fi adventures of traveling the multiverse. With the series returning this week for its long-awaited sixth season, we’re looking back at season one to explore what made this show such a stand-out success. Here’s what you need to know about Rick and Morty:

Vault AI uses index scores to describe the impact a given story/theme/element will have on specific KPIs:

≤79 Disappointing  80-89 Challenging  90-109 Average  110-119 Promising  120+ Outstanding

Who are the fans of this series?
A broad cross-section of men ages 18-54. The overall Rick and Morty audience leans slightly male (57%) and older (57% M35+), though 22% of viewers are ages 18-34.  The audience is very similar to South Park and Solar Opposites, while younger than Archer and more male-skewing than both Family Guy and American Dad!.

What has made Rick and Morty such a stand-out success?
Unpredictable sci-fi adventures, clever referential comedy, and relatable family themes. The show’s Pop Culture References (140) and zany Over-the-Top Humor (138) quickly established its comedic bona fides to engage adult animation fans.  Though the blending of relatable themes including Multigenerational (138) Family Relationships (130) and Disagreements (134) with unpredictable and creative Space Settings (131) is uniquely important for the series. These themes make the universe-hopping, time-traveling escapades of the titular pair amp up the show’s sense of Adventure (126) and keeps every episode feeling creatively fresh.

Why is the series so popular internationally?
The family dynamics. While the show’s culturally-relevant comedy is the big draw in the US, its American sense of humor is not as relatable to viewers overseas. Instead, international markets are attracted to the relatable relationships between Rick, his grandson Morty, and the rest of their quirky kin.

What does season six’s social tracking look like?
It’s right in line with season five’s June 2021 release. Currently, online activity falls in the ‘Promising’ range, leading up to an expected bump on premiere day and outperforming legacy animated comedy comp Archer’s latest season release. Season five saw sustained peaks throughout its 10-episode release, and it’s likely season six will boast the same pattern.

Rapid Insights: Selling the OC Will Once Again Make Real Estate Sexy

The Oppenheim Group, the high-end real estate agency featured in Netflix’s hit reality show Selling Sunset, has opened a brand new office in Orange County and has produced a brand new Netflix series to go with it. Just like its predecessor, this spin-off will revel in the addictive drama, romances, and betrayals among a group of employees as they compete to sell luxury homes in Southern California. Here’s what you need to know about Selling the OC:

Vault AI uses index scores to describe the impact a given story/theme/element will have on specific KPIs:

≤79 Disappointing  80-89 Challenging  90-109 Average  110-119 Promising  120+ Outstanding

Will the same Selling-addicted audience be tuning in?
Definitely. Viewers of Selling the OC are predicted to be mostly female (59%) and lean older (54% aged 30+), almost identical to the audience for Selling Tampa, another entry in the franchise. Additionally, the overall Selling IP (129) is a top ratings driver.

What will get viewers invested in this newest crop of agents?
Their interpersonal dynamics. Moreso than the original, the palpable Romantic Tension (157) and fickle Co-Worker Relationships (147) (both platonic and non) between the Oppenheim employees will generate deliciously heightened drama, and their Difficult Workplace (131) rife with friction and backstabbing will encourage viewers to take sides.

What role will the real estate purchasing play in the show’s success?
It will help with longevity. The show’s core concept of House Hunting (152) offers a repeatable premise that audiences can follow in each episode and an evergreen source of new client stories that will help push it into a second season. However, viewership will depend more heavily on the drama between the Oppenheim employees.

What will drive the online conversation?
Extravagance and enmity. The excessively affluent, Wealthy Lifestyles (110) of the real estate agents–from lavish mansions to yacht parties to luxury clothing–and their resulting Rivalries (110) over sales and financial success are the top drivers for social buzz.

What could bring even more people into the conversation?
Humor. The fun playfulness baked into the show’s DNA, which StoryGuide reads as Comedy (112), stems directly from the tensions and personality clashes between agents, and these more ridiculously dramatic moments could be leveraged for greater online chatter.

Rapid Insights: House of the Dragon Will Set Ratings Aflame

Will the House of the Dragon audience mirror that of Game of Thrones?
Indeed. Dragon is predicted to lean male (56%), with the linear HBO broadcast skewing heavily older (89% 35+) and HBOMax contributing a slightly younger audience (36% <30). This viewer profile mirrors Game of Thrones almost exactly (as well as fellow medieval fantasy dramas The Witcher and the upcoming Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power).

Are fans excited for this new spin-off?
Oh yeah. Social tracking maxed out our scale (of 160) with each trailer drop and has been heightened since the end of July as viewers anticipate this Sunday’s premiere.

How will Dragon differentiate itself from its predecessor?
By concentrating its scope. Instead of mirroring Game of Thrones’ wide-reaching Multiple Storylines (127) that followed characters and action across kingdoms, factions, and continents, Dragon will spotlight the heightenedFamily Conflict (136) within a single Extended Clan (129). This sharper focus will be its most crucial ratings driver as well as a key factor in its longevity.

What else will help boost the show’s ratings?
The titular dragons. Beyond the obviously Popular IP (114), Daenerys’ “children” were a highlight in Game of Thrones and the Myth & Fantasy (113) of her ancestors’ magical beasts will similarly be a draw for House of the Dragon, especially the intense Battle Action (112) sequences featuring fire-based destruction. The fact that the Targaryens can bend dragons to their will heightens the stakes in their intrafamilial war.

What type of story is Dragon going to tell?
An epic family saga. This series promises to be very Succession-esque, focusing on the Rivalry (114) between Targaryen heirs in their ruthless struggle for Power (147) and Social Status (113) and to impress the current King, desires that ultimately drive the story. Like Game of Thrones, Dragon also leans heavily into the War (134) and History (132) genres, giving it an expansive, legendary feel.

Rapid Insights: A League of Their Own Makes a Classic Tale Relevant

Who will be tuning in?
Older women. The audience is predicted to lean female (58%) as well as 30+ (58%), similar to other streaming series with primarily female ensemble casts (GlowOrange Is the New Black).

What crucial core essence will this series share with the movie?
Compelling team relationships against a backdrop of broader social change. As in the 1992 film, the trailer follows the formation and eventual success of the Rockford Peaches, and the Coach-Athlete Relationship (160) between the washed-up, cantankerous Coach Dove Porter and his players as well as the inviolable Female Friendships (160) forged between Peach teammates lie at its heart. At the same time, the story presents a strong narrative of Female Empowerment (160) within the context of professional Sports (158) as the women players defy the conservative, patriarchal society of 1940s America. All are top drivers of engagement for both movie and series.

What new elements does this remake bring to the story?
Explorations of the minority experience. The trailer both delves into an African-American POV (160) by following the Racial Tensions (121) encountered by a mega-talented Black player banned from the all-white league, and highlights LGBTQIA+ Themes (120) by showcasing the dynamics among several queer players as they discover a safe space within a hostile world. Although these viewpoints were left out of the original film, they are just as important in bringing audiences to the series.

What emotional experience will most entice audiences?
Upbeat idealism. The trailer foregrounds feelings of Awe (129)Amazement (129), and Joy (126) as the various players live, love, laugh, and have fun with their newfound senses of freedom and opportunity in the league. These positive emotions are a crucial factor in driving ratings.

How will the series’ sense of humor factor into its success?
It will make the central relationships more dynamic. The core players–already portrayed by a critically-acclaimed comedic cast–engage in witty one-liners and physical jokes that feed directly into the their Friendships (146), camaraderie, and Empowerment (143).
